Combined thermal-surgical therapeutic approach in vasomotor rhinitis

Article abstract
Nasal obstruction is frequently caused by hypertrophy of the lower turbinates. If the medical therapy was ineffective the surgical approach is necessary to improve the nasal flow. We have selected 20 patients with vasomotor rhinitis and all patients were treated with sub-mucosal decongestion. Ten of them were also treated with thermal therapy after surgery. We used the alkaline-bicarbonate water of Bibione therme. After 2 months all patients were evaluated with the study of the mucociliary transport (tTMC) and we founded that in the patients treated also with thermal therapy the value of the tTMC were average 1 minute and 40 seconds better than the other group. Moreover we have founded a total absence of crusts in the thermal group contrarily to the group not subordinate to thermal treatment. We may conclude that the therapy with bicarbonate-alkaline water used in Bibione therme improves the physiologic state fastely after surgery so thermal therapy must be considered not only for treatment of chronic pathologies but also like an adjuvant therapy.
