Article abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of balneotherapy in patients with the Primary Fibromyalgia Syndrome (PFS). 40 patients (37 females, 3 males) with PFS, diagnosed by the criteria of the American College of Rheumatology, were treated by balneotherapy once a day, five times a week, over a period of two weeks. 20 patients without balneotherapy served as a control group. An algometer was used to evaluate the pain score.

The mean pressure algometer score in the balneotherapy group changed statistically significantly at the end of therapy, at 3 weeks and 4 weeks after the end of therapy, whereas it did not change significantly in the control group.

As a conclusion, balneotherapy may be an alternative treatment of PFS without any side effects.
